In just two weeks on June 1, KHORIKOS competes to represent Manhattan in WNYC and WQXR's 3rd annual Battle of the Boroughs! We’re putting our interpretation of Renaissance music up against 13 groups representing an eclectic mix of Manhattan music from singer-songwriters and rockers to Afrobeat and North-Indian classical.

As much as we pride ourselves on artistic excellence, this competition is an unabashedly American-Idol style popularity contest, so it’s up to you to move us into the finals.

Here's How Voting Works:

Round 1 - Friday, June 1st

  • At 7pm all the groups perform for a live audience.
  • Initial voting begins once all groups perform.
  • You can vote in person, online, or by text message.
  • Voting remains open for only 1 hour.
  • The top 3 groups move on to the second round of voting.

Round 2 - The week after

  • WNYC announces the top 3 Manhattan groups on Monday, June 4 and will post videos of those performances online.
  • Voting—online or by txt msg—opens for 1 week.
  • The group with the most votes goes on to compete in the Ultimate Battle against the other Boroughs on June 26.

"Great," you say, "but how can I help?"

  • Come out and support us live at The Green Space. The more energy we can get in the room, the better!
  • If you can’t make it in person, watch the live webcast.
  • If you can’t watch the webcast or make it in person, keep an eye on Facebook or Twitter to get updates on when voting opens and how to vote by text message.
  • Spread the word and vote, vote, vote!

Leave a comment if you have any questions, and let us know if you’ll be able to make it out on the 1st!

The Greene Space at WNYC and WQXR Announces

The Third Annual BATTLE OF THE BOROUGHS

Citywide Competition to Discover NYC’s Best Emerging Talent

Kicks Off with the BROOKLYN BATTLE on Friday, February 3 at 7pm

(New York, NY – February 1, 2012) – For the past two years, Queens was named the Ultimate Winner at THE BATTLE OF THE BOROUGHS, The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space’s search for NYC’s greatest up-and-coming talent.  Will another borough be able to take the crown this year?

For the third year in a row, The Greene Space will offer the finest contestants from all five boroughs – ensembles, instrumentalists, singers, DJs, spoken word artists and performance artists of all genres – a chance to compete for an aspiring artist’s dream prize: a featured concert in a hip, downtown Manhattan venue, presented to a global audience via live video webcast; a private recording session in a broadcast-quality studio; and new tech equipment to build their image from home.

On Friday, February 3 at 7pm, the competition will commence with The BROOKLYN BATTLE.  Thirteen contestants will come together to play for a live audience at The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space, the innovative and acoustically superb street-level studio at WNYC and WQXR, in hopes of securing a spot at the Ultimate Battle in June 2012.  Competing from all over Kings County will be Latin soul and boogaloo group Spanglish Fly; rock outfit DBCR; experimental roots artists Underground System Afrobeat; soul rock band The Dirty Gems; country folk singer Willy Gantrim; dancehall reggae-fused Brown Rice Family; soul and jazz-tinged Stephanie Rooker & The Search Engine; alternative popsmith band Lord Classic; funk fusion rockers BT3; classical soprano Malesha Jessie; Japanese gypsy rock group Kagero; hip hop artists The Lo Frequency; and soul folk singer Nijae Draine.

The Brooklyn Battle winner will go on to compete against other borough battle winners in the Ultimate Battle (schedule and artists below).  The Ultimate Battle winner will perform an exclusive concert in The Greene Space.

Returning as Battle series emcee is award-winning WQXR host TERRANCE MCKNIGHT, whose Saturday evening show All Ears is a celebration of musical discovery and unexpected cross-genre connections.  LEITAL MOLAD, a producer for WNYC’s Studio 360 with Kurt Andersen, and HSI-CHANG LIN, an associate producer for WNYC’s The Takeaway who also composes music for film, television and web video, will provide colorful commentary throughout the night.  The evening will also feature background videos and interviews with the performers.

“The Battle of the Boroughs experience is as eclectic as walking down a New York City street – the diverse soundscape is a musical potpourri, with a wide range of melodies and rhythms representing every corner of the city,” said MCKNIGHT.  “The most exciting part for me is seeing a community of listeners having a great time, discovering music together, and coming back for more.”

‘A Melancholy Beauty’: Operatic Holocaust story has a happy ending

(Marc Apter) - Soloist Neli Andreeva performs in “A Melancholy Beauty” at the Kennedy Center.

Georgi Andreev’s oratorio “A Melancholy Beauty” relates that rare Holocaust story: one with a happy ending.

It had its world premiere Tuesday at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall in a compelling performance by the National Philharmonic and members of seven U.S. and Bulgarian choral ensembles under the baton of Henry H. Leck.

........

In a pre-oratorio program of music performed by the choirs that would later form the large chorus for Andreev’s work, the brief, sweetly devotional “Whosoever Saves a Single Life” (another world premiere, by oratorio soloist Osborne) was beautifully rendered by the fine New York-based ensemble Khorikos.

Songs of Life Festival Sunday, June 26, 2011 3:00 PM Avery Fisher Hall
Songs of Life Festival will feature the World Premiere performance of a newly-commissioned oratorio, A Melancholy Beauty, depicting the inspiring story of the rescue of all Bulgaria’s Jews during World War II. A Melancholy Beauty is a major choral-orchestral work with a performing force of 300 superb musicians, consisting of children and adult choirs, Bulgarian female folk vocal ensemble, a full symphony orchestra, authentic Bulgarian folk instruments, soloists and narrators. The oratorio was composed by the award-winning Bulgarian composer, Georgi Andreev, who combines classical choral-orchestral music with traditional rhythms and folk styles that are rarely encountered today! The original lyrics composed by librettist Scott Cairns and contributing author Aryeh Finklestein will be conducted by Maestro Henry H. Leck, founder and artistic director of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir.
The performing choirs include: The Indianapolis Children’s Choir, IN; the Philip Kutev National Folklore Ensemble, Bulgaria; KHORIKOS Choir, NY; and The Victor Valley College Singers and Master Arts Chorale, CA. These choirs will be accompanied by the renowned National Philharmonic as they perform the oratorio in celebration of a poignant historical moment. The Festival will also premiere the motet, Whosoever Saves a Single Life, composed by internationally renowned cantor and composer, Charles David Osborne, for mixed choirs.
In addition to the world premiere of A Melancholy Beauty, the participating choirs will each feature an A Cappella program specially selected by the Festival conductors: Henry H. Leck, Jesse Peckham, Thomas Miller, and artistic director Georgi Andreev. Founders, Kalin and Sharon Tchonev, launched Songs of Life, first, as a tribute to the Bulgarian people, which rescued the entire Jewish population from the Nazis. Sharon’s maternal grandparents were among the survivors. Inspired by the heroic acts of the Bulgarian people who risked their lives for their fellow citizens, Kalin and Sharon founded Songs of Life, secondly, to champion the principles of tolerance in the midst of diversity and bravery in the face of prejudice.
